What are Cooks in the Navy Called?

Here's a question that I found in a "How well do you know the Navy?" article on StarExponent.com:

What are cooks in the Navy called?

A. Mess management specialists
B. Cooks
C. Mess stewards
D. Culinary specialists

  1. When I was in the Navy (Submarines) We called the cooks "Duty Chemists"...Just teasin'. At that time they were Commisarymen. I don't know what they are called now.

  2. You're right. We were commissarymen in your day. I started as a CS in 1970-71.

    The rating was changed to mess management specialist (MS) on Jan 1, 1975.

    A few years ago, the Navy changed the title again to culinary specialist. It's much better than the MS title. I still don't like the word "specialist."

    The new abbrviation is CS. It looks like we've come full circle ...
